The Indian Army has opened 90 Commissioned Officer vacancies under the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (TES-57), for the course commencing July 2027. Applications close on 12 November 2026 at 12:00 noon.
This is the shortest route from Class 12 to an Army officer's commission that exists. You do not need a degree — you earn one during training, paid for by the Army, and you walk out as a Lieutenant on Level 10 pay.
There is also a hard limit on who can take it. The upper age is 19 years 6 months. If you are 20, this door is already closed and no relaxation exists. That is why it is worth reading this page today rather than next year.
What TES actually gives you
Most defence entries give you a job. TES gives you a job and a degree at the same time, and this is the part candidates underestimate.
You train for four years. Three years at a Cadets Training Wing, one year at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. At the end you hold an engineering degree and a permanent commission as a Lieutenant.
The three-year phase happens at one of three military engineering institutions, and which one you go to decides your branch of engineering:
| Institute | Engineering stream |
|---|---|
| College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune | Civil and Mechanical Engineering |
| Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE), Mhow | Telecommunication and IT Engineering |
| Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), Secunderabad | Electronics and Mechanical Engineering |
Set that against the alternative. A private engineering college costs several lakh rupees across four years and ends with a degree and a job hunt. TES costs you nothing, ends with the degree and a commission already in hand, and the Army has paid for all of it.
Dates
| Notification | 6 October 2026 |
| Application opens | 14 October 2026, 12:00 noon |
| Application closes | 12 November 2026, 12:00 noon |
| Shortlist expected | Fourth week of November 2026 (tentative) |
| SSB Interview expected | February – March 2027 (tentative) |
| Course commences | July 2027 |
Note the closing time: 12:00 noon, not midnight. Defence portals close at noon and candidates who assume they have until 11:59 PM on the last day lose the application entirely. Do not plan around the final day at all.
Eligibility — four conditions, all strict
1. Age: 16 years 6 months to 19 years 6 months as on 1 July 2027.
In date terms, you must be born between 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2011, both dates inclusive.
There is no age relaxation for any category in this entry. No SC, ST, OBC or other concession applies to the age bracket. A single day outside the range is a rejection, so check your 10th certificate date of birth — that is the date the Army uses, not the one on any other document.
2. Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, at a minimum 60% aggregate in those three subjects.
The 60% is calculated on PCM only, not on your overall percentage. If your total was 58% but your PCM average is 64%, you are eligible. Work it out from your marksheet before you decide you are out.
3. You must have appeared in JEE Main 2026.
This is the condition that surprises people, and it is non-negotiable. The Army shortlists TES candidates using the JEE Main 2026 Common Rank List. No JEE Main attempt means no shortlist, regardless of your board marks.
You do not need to have cleared JEE Advanced, and you do not need a seat anywhere. You need to have sat JEE Main 2026 and to have a CRL. The Army then sets its own cut-off on that list each cycle, and it is not published in advance.
4. Unmarried male candidates only.
TES is restricted to unmarried men. Selected candidates must also undertake not to marry until training is complete — a four-year commitment, and marrying during training means discharge and recovery of the cost of training.
Women aiming for a technical officer entry should look at NDA, which has been open to women since 2021, and at the Technical Graduate and SSC Tech entries after a degree.
Selection — JEE rank, then five days at SSB
- Shortlisting on the JEE Main 2026 Common Rank List. The Army fixes a cut-off on the CRL and calls candidates above it. There is no written exam of the Army's own at this stage.
- SSB Interview — a five-day Services Selection Board assessment at Prayagraj, Bhopal, Bengaluru or Jalandhar.
- Medical examination at a military hospital, for candidates recommended by the SSB.
- Final merit list, prepared on SSB marks alone, subject to medical fitness and eligibility.
Read that last point carefully, because it changes how you should prepare. Your JEE rank gets you to the SSB and then stops mattering. The final merit list is built from SSB marks. A candidate scraping in at the cut-off and a candidate with a strong rank arrive at the SSB on exactly equal terms.
Which means: once the shortlist is out, every hour you spend worrying about your JEE score is wasted. The SSB is the whole competition.
What the five days look like
Day 1 — Screening. An Officer Intelligence Rating test, then Picture Perception and Description followed by a group discussion of the story. Roughly half to two-thirds of candidates are sent home the same evening. Screening is where most TES hopefuls fail, and it tests speed and clarity, not knowledge.
Days 2 to 4 — Psychology, Group Testing and the Interview. Thematic Apperception, Word Association and Situation Reaction tests; outdoor group tasks, the group planning exercise, the lecturette and the command task; and a personal interview that runs between forty minutes and over an hour.
Day 5 — Conference. The whole board sees you briefly, and results follow the same day.
The SSB is assessing fifteen Officer Like Qualities, and the thing it is really measuring is consistency. Your psychology responses, your behaviour in the group tasks and your answers in the interview must describe the same person. Candidates who try to perform a different personality in each test are detected, every time.
Practical preparation, for a 17- or 18-year-old with weeks rather than months: be able to talk fluently about your own life — your school, your family, your subjects, your hobbies, your home town — in concrete detail. Read a newspaper daily so current affairs in the interview are not a blank. And get your body to the standards below, because physical confidence shows in the group tasks and nervousness shows just as clearly.
Physical standards expected on arrival
| 2.4 km run | 10 minutes 30 seconds |
| Push-ups | 40 |
| Pull-ups | 6 |
| Sit-ups | 30 |
| Squats | 2 sets of 30 |
| Lunges | 2 sets of 10 |
| Swimming | Basic technique |
These are the levels you are expected to arrive with, not targets to reach during training. Four months is enough time to build to all of them from a standing start if you begin now. Swimming is the one that takes longest to acquire if you cannot swim at all — start that first.
Money — what you are paid, and when
| Phase I — 3 years at CTW | No stipend |
| Phase II — 1 year at IMA | Rs. 56,100 per month |
| On commissioning as Lieutenant | Level 10, Rs. 56,100 – 1,77,500 |
| Military Service Pay | Rs. 15,500 per month |
| Approximate annual CTC | Rs. 17 – 18 lakh |
Be clear-eyed about the first row: the three years at the Cadets Training Wing carry no stipend. Your training, accommodation and messing are provided, but there is no monthly payment. The stipend starts only in the fourth year at IMA.
That matters if you are the earning hope of your family. Four years with three unpaid, then roughly Rs. 17 to 18 lakh a year from the day you are commissioned at 22 or 23 — far ahead of almost any other 12th-level entry. But the sequence is worth explaining at home before you accept a place.
There is no application fee. The Indian Army does not charge for officer-entry applications, and anyone asking you for money to process a TES application is defrauding you.
How to apply
- Go to joinindianarmy.nic.in and register. If you already have an account from an earlier entry, log in to that one rather than making a second.
- Complete your profile — personal details, Class 12 marks subject by subject, and your JEE Main 2026 roll number and CRL.
- Enter your name and date of birth exactly as printed on your 10th certificate. Any mismatch there stops you at document verification, not at the application stage, which is far more painful.
- Open the TES-57 (10+2 Technical Entry Scheme) entry and apply.
- Pick your SSB centre preference from Prayagraj, Bhopal, Bengaluru or Jalandhar.
- Submit before 12 November 2026 at 12:00 noon and take a printout of the acknowledgement.
- Watch your registered email and the portal from the fourth week of November for the shortlist.
Problems candidates hit — and what to do
"I did not appear in JEE Main 2026."
Then you cannot be shortlisted for TES-57, because the entire shortlist is drawn from the JEE Main 2026 Common Rank List. If you are still within the age band for a later TES cycle, sit JEE Main next year and apply to TES-58. If you are close to 19 years 6 months, switch your target to NDA, which has its own written exam and no JEE dependency.
"My JEE Main rank is poor. Is there any point applying?"
Yes, apply. The Army sets its own cut-off on the CRL each cycle and it is not the IIT or NIT cut-off — it is set by how many candidates it needs to call for 90 vacancies. And if you clear it, your rank is then irrelevant: the final merit list is built on SSB marks alone. The application is free. There is no reason not to try.
"My PCM is 59.6%. Can I round it up?"
No. 60% in PCM is a hard floor and boards do not round in your favour. If a re-evaluation is still available for your board and would carry you over, that is the only route. Otherwise look at NDA, which has a less restrictive marks condition, or at non-technical entries after a degree.
"I am 19 years 10 months. Any relaxation?"
None. TES has no age relaxation for any category, and the age is reckoned as on 1 July 2027 with a date-of-birth window of 1 January 2008 to 1 January 2011. Your alternatives at this age are NDA (if still within its own window), CDS after graduation, and the Technical Graduate Course after an engineering degree.
"I was screened out at SSB on day one."
Screening tests speed and clarity of expression, not knowledge, and it is the most improvable stage of the whole process. Work on the Picture Perception and Description Test under strict time, and practise speaking first and concisely in group discussions. Candidates get repeated SSB attempts across different entries, and screened-out candidates frequently get recommended on a later attempt.
"Can I marry during training?"
No. Candidates undertake not to marry until training is complete. Marriage during the four years means discharge and recovery of training costs from you.
"Only 90 posts. Is it worth the effort?"
Count the filters rather than the posts. Unmarried male, Class 12 PCM at 60%, a JEE Main 2026 appearance, an age window of exactly three years, and SSB plus full medical fitness. Each one removes a large share of applicants. The field that actually reaches the SSB for these 90 seats is nothing like the field that reads the notification.
What to do in the next three weeks
Apply this week, not in the last few days — defence portals slow badly near a noon deadline and a failed submission has no second chance.
Then start running. The shortlist comes in late November and the SSB falls around February or March 2027, which gives you roughly four months. That is enough to go from untrained to the standards in the table above, and it is also enough to arrive at the SSB visibly fit, which affects how you are read in the group tasks before you say a word.
Alongside that, read a newspaper every day and start keeping a notebook on yourself — your school, your subjects, your family, your responsibilities, your failures. The personal interview is an hour of questions about exactly that, and a candidate who has thought about their own life answers very differently from one who has not.
Bookmark this page. We will update it with the shortlist, the SSB call-up and the final merit list as each is released, and the notification PDF above is hosted on our own server, so it stays available even if the official link moves.
