Government recruitment runs on an annual cycle that barely changes. SSC CGL's notification lands mid-year every year. IBPS PO prelims is an October exam every year. UPSC Civil Services prelims is in the May–June window every year.
Knowing that cycle is worth more than knowing one exact date, because it lets you decide in January what you are preparing for in September. The candidates who struggle are the ones who find out an exam exists when the notification appears and then have six weeks.
Read the table below as windows, not dates. Each entry is the period that exam has consistently fallen in. The official calendars — and only those — carry the actual dates; the last section lists which ones to check and when they come out.
January – March 2027
| Exam | Typical window | What falls here |
|---|---|---|
| SSC GD Constable | January – February | Computer-based exam |
| JEE Main Session 1 | January | Exam |
| AFCAT 1 | February | Exam |
| UPSC Engineering Services | February | Prelims |
| CTET | February | Exam |
| SBI Clerk | February – March | Prelims |
| SSC CPO (SI in Delhi Police & CAPF) | March – April | Notification |
| CUET UG | February – March | Application window |
| SSC JE | February – April | Notification |
This quarter is the lightest for notifications and the heaviest for exams carried over from the previous year's notifications. It is the best three-month block in the calendar for building fundamentals, because very little is competing for your attention.
April – June 2027
| Exam | Typical window | What falls here |
|---|---|---|
| JEE Main Session 2 | April | Exam |
| UPSC NDA 1 / CDS 1 | April | Exam |
| NEET UG | May | Exam |
| CUET UG | May – June | Exam |
| UPSC Civil Services | May – June | Prelims |
| SSC CPO | June | Paper 1 |
| SSC JE | June | Paper 1 |
| SSC CGL | June | Notification |
| SSC CHSL | May – June | Notification |
| IBPS RRB | June | Notification |
| SBI PO | June – July | Notification |
The busiest notification quarter of the year. SSC CGL and CHSL both open here, and so does the bank cycle. If you intend to write either, your preparation needs to be substantially finished before June, not starting in it.
July – September 2027
| Exam | Typical window | What falls here |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CHSL | July – August | Tier 1 |
| UPSC CMS | July | Exam |
| IBPS Clerk | July | Notification |
| SSC MTS | June – July | Notification |
| IBPS PO | August | Notification |
| IBPS SO | August | Notification |
| IBPS RRB | August | Prelims |
| AFCAT 2 | August | Exam |
| UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant | August | Exam |
| UPSC Civil Services | August – September | Mains |
| SSC GD Constable | August – September | Notification |
| UPSC NDA 2 / CDS 2 | September | Exam |
| SSC CGL | September – October | Tier 1 |
The heaviest quarter overall, and the one where overlapping dates actually force a choice. If you are writing both SSC CGL Tier 1 and the IBPS cycle, they collide here, and deciding in advance which has priority is better than discovering the clash on an admit card.
October – December 2027
| Exam | Typical window | What falls here |
|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO | October | Prelims |
| IBPS Clerk | August – October | Prelims |
| SSC MTS | September – October | Exam |
| SSC CGL | November – December | Tier 2 |
| IBPS PO | November | Mains |
| IBPS SO | October – November | Prelims & Mains |
| RBI Assistant | September – November | Notification & exam |
| SBI Clerk | December | Notification |
| CTET | December | Exam |
| SSC CGL / CHSL | December onwards | Results & document verification |
Mostly exams and results rather than fresh notifications. It is the right quarter to start on the next year's primary exam, because the notification cycle restarts in February.
Exams with no fixed calendar
Some of the largest recruiters do not publish an annual calendar at all, and planning around an assumed date for them is a mistake:
- RRB (Railways) — NTPC, Group D, ALP and technician notifications appear when vacancies are sanctioned, not on a schedule. Group D and NTPC cycles have run years apart. Watch the RRB websites directly.
- State PSCs — APPSC, TSPSC, MPSC, BPSC and the rest each run their own cycle, tied to state vacancy sanctions. Some notify annually, some do not.
- State police recruitment — driven by state government sanction; no national pattern.
- Army Agniveer — rally and CEE schedules are released region by region through the year.
- PSU recruitment — NTPC, ONGC, BHEL, SAIL and others notify against their own requirement, often through GATE scores.
Which official calendars to actually check
| Body | Publishes | When |
|---|---|---|
| UPSC | Annual examination calendar with exact notification and exam dates | Well in advance, often more than a year ahead |
| SSC | Annual tentative calendar for all its exams | Usually before the cycle begins |
| IBPS | Annual calendar for PO, Clerk, SO and RRB | Around the start of the calendar year |
| NTA | Dates per exam, with the information bulletin | Exam by exam |
| RRB | No annual calendar | — |
UPSC's calendar is the most reliable document in Indian recruitment and it is published furthest ahead. If any UPSC exam is in your plan, download it the day it appears and work backwards from the date.
How to use a calendar instead of just reading it
Pick your primary exam, then count backwards. If SSC CGL Tier 1 is in late September, and you need four months of revision and mocks, your syllabus has to be finished by May. That gives you a start date, which is the number a calendar is actually for.
Add the exams that share its syllabus. SSC CGL pairs with CHSL, CPO and MTS; IBPS PO pairs with Clerk, SO, SBI PO and RRB Officer. The same preparation gives you four or five attempts in a year instead of one, and the calendar shows you they are spread out enough to take all of them.
Mark the collisions now. The September–October block regularly puts SSC and IBPS exams on the same weekends. Knowing which you would choose removes a bad decision made under pressure.
Treat the notification date as the deadline, not the exam date. Application windows run three to four weeks. Certificates, photographs in the prescribed format, fee payment — all of it has to be ready before the window opens, not during it. A caste or EWS certificate alone can take a month.
Do not wait for a notification to begin. Every syllabus above is published and stable. The notification tells you the vacancy count and the dates; it does not tell you anything you need in order to start studying.
Problems candidates hit — and what to do
"The exam date moved." Routine. Dates in official calendars are tentative until the notification, and even then they shift. Plan for the earliest plausible date so a delay works in your favour instead of against it.
"Two exams I want are on the same day." Choose on vacancy count and your realistic chance, not on which sounds better. Then put the other one in next year's plan deliberately rather than regretting it.
"I missed a notification." It will come round again next year — the cycle is annual. What costs you the year is not noticing until the window has closed, so check the official sites monthly rather than relying on being told.
"I cannot prepare for everything on this calendar." Nobody can, and nobody should try. One primary exam plus the ones sharing its syllabus is the whole strategy. The rest of the calendar is there so you know what you are not doing.
